SECTION C (30 MARKS)
Answer two questions from this section
9. Under certain conditions, iron reacts with chlorine to give anhydrous iron (III) chloride.
(a) Why does an excess of chlorine gas have to be used? Explain.
(b) Why should moisture not be allowed into the apparatus during the reaction?
(c) Why is iron (II) chloride not the final product? Show using balanced chemical equations.
10. (a) Compound A (C4H10O) is oxidized with acidified potassium dichromate to give compound B. When it is dehydrated with conc. H2SO4, Compound A gives compound C, which undergoes hydrogenation to give compound D. Compound D is capable of undergoing a substitution reaction. Identify compounds B, C, and D, and write their structures.
