The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) is a government institution operating under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Its main role is to translate national education policies into effective curricula and learning materials aimed at improving the quality of education across all levels, including pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher training colleges.
TIE was established in 1963 through Act No. 13 as the Institute of Education, initially functioning under the University of Dar es Salaam. Its early responsibility was to coordinate teacher training and support improvements in teaching and learning. In 1975, it became an independent institution under the Ministry of Education and Culture. Later, in 1987, it was renamed the Institute of Curriculum Development, reflecting its expanded focus on curriculum design. In 1993, it officially became TIE, and in 2009 it was recognized as a non-university higher education institution supervised by the National Council for Technical Education.
